Reaching audiences using social media is an ever-changing beast. We can feel we’ve mastered the algorithms and then the platform changes and we’re faced with new challenges and barriers to those we are trying to speak to. We’re often tempted to just shove our hard-earned and limited cash on boosting posts, sponsoring Instagram stories or delving into the world of TikTok advertising without really knowing what we’re actually doing.

That’s not to say that putting some specific budget aside when we’re promoting important things such as releasing and big shows isn’t very useful, but we need to consider it as part of wider strategy.

This session with Matt will look at best practice when it comes to social media advertising. How to go about creating adverts that will help you reach the people you want to target and make them useful within your wider activities for building your audience. We’ll also consider the different options on the social media platforms and how best to use them. Social media advertising has been created for all businesses, so we must ensure our approach will fit with a music audience and the way they engage with content and get hooked in.

During this session, we’ll also discuss specific issues that we have had with social media advertising and share experiences of things that have worked.

Matt is a PROPELLER artist mentor and currently looks after marketing and social media at Manchester-based indie label Gondwana Records, alongside managing singer-songwriter Astles. Matt has worked as a music marketing and strategy consultant for major labels alongside independent and emerging artists and bands. He was also an A+R scout for Cooking Vinyl Publishing.
